Tooth scary! Dentist creates horror video game in MS Paint …

The game draws on dentist Paweł Kozmiński’s fascination with Japanese horror, which he first encountered as a child in the 1990s.

A Polish dentist has created a creepy, Japanese-inspired video game in black and white using MS Paint.

Set in a small seaside town in Japan, “World of Horror” was created by Paweł Kozmiński who comes from the town of Głogów.

Players can choose between five characters, each of whom has their own story and perspective. wohgame.com

The game draws on Kozmiński’s fascination with Japanese horror, which he first encountered as a child in the 1990s. Later, as a teenager, he read classic horror literature.

On the game’s website, he describes it as “a love letter to the works of Junji Ito and HP Lovecraft”, referring to the Japanese horror manga artist and the American horror writer.

Navigating Kozmiński’s spooky universe, players engage in turn-based combat and look for clues.wohgame.com

“The Old Gods are reawakening, clawing their way back into a world that is spiralling into a mysterious madness. (…) It’s the end of the world and the only solution is to confront the terror reigning over the apocalypse,” the description on the game’s website states.

Kozmiński from Głogów said: “Creating art in Paint is actually really inspiring and somehow relaxing,”. “The limits of the program really force you to get creative with it, which is a huge thing. I guess 1-bit black-and-white art is the closest I can get to simulate that comic book feel, too.”kodent.pl

Kozmiński created the game’s black-and-white imagery, which features manga-inspired people and detailed landscapes, using MS Paint – the simple drawing programme included with Microsoft Windows, which players of his generation may remember from their childhood. In his opinion, Paint’s limits have been an advantage: they force you to get creative.

Unlike some horror films and video games, “World of Horror” does not rely on jump scares, a technique in which players are surprised by an abrupt change, sometimes accompanied by screaming. Instead, it relies “solely on its unnerving environments and amorphous terrors to create a gnawing sense of dread”, the game’s website explains.

This atmosphere is compounded by the game’s eerie chiptune score, a style of synthesised electronic music associated with video games.

The game will be available on Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4 some time this year.
